Law clerks generally work with all five practice groups, enjoy a wide breadth of legal experience and work with associates and senior partners. At any given time, HMB may employ between 4 and 5 law clerks. Law clerks are paid on an hourly basis.
Law Clerk Candidate Requirements
To be eligible for law clerk interviewing at HMB, a law student must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Year in law school when applying: 1L or 2L for summer positions; 2L or 3L for academic year positions; and
- Prior law firm experience is preferred but not required
If you meet the eligibility requirements, please submit the following: cover letter, resume, law school transcript and a writing sample (less than 10 pages).
1L Candidates: Please submit your undergraduate transcript if you do not have a law school transcript along with the listed documents above, once a law school transcript is available to you please submit it as well.
Please submit all documents in PDF format, in one email to lawclerkapplications@hmblaw.com. HMB will not review any candidate materials that are incomplete or submitted outside of the time frames specified below.
Summer/Full-Time Positions
If you are interested in a full-time (40 hours/week) law clerk position for the summer, you must submit the documents referenced above by January 31st of the applicable year. HMB’s Law Clerk Committee will review all applications on a rolling basis. If you are selected, HMB will contact you to schedule a TEAMS video interview.
Academic Year/Part-Time Positions
If you are interested in a part-time (15-20 hours/week) law clerk position during the academic year (September through April), you must submit the documents referenced above between April 1st and July 31st. You must attend a Chicago-based law school in order to clerk at HMB during the academic year.
