Aaron L. Hammer

Aaron L. Hammer

Aaron devotes his practice to solving his client's most challenging insolvency and creditors' rights issues by emphasizing a practical, business-oriented, relationship-based approach in both distressed transactions and related litigation. Over more than twenty years, Aaron led major engagements on behalf of corporate borrowers, lenders and financiers and, most notably, bankruptcy committees in hundreds of significant bankruptcies and workouts across the country and in many foreign countries. He is a partner at HMB and chairs the firm's national Bankruptcy, Reorganization and Creditors' Rights practice group.

His core work involves the representation of:

  • Corporate borrowers and their lenders, vendors and other major parties-in-interest in out-of-court workouts, reorganizations and chapter 11 bankruptcies across the country
  • Bankruptcy committees - both official and unofficial - to preserve and enhance recoveries for their constituents in significant chapter 11 proceedings
  • Chapter 7, chapter 11 and liquidation trustees as well as post-confirmation plan administrators in complex regional and national bankruptcy cases

Prior to joining HMB, Aaron was a name partner at Sugar Felsenthal Grais & Hammer LLP and Chairman of its Executive Committee. Twice, he led his firms in receiving the Turnaround Management Association's ("TMA") prestigious Large Transaction of the Year award. In 2014, the award was granted for his work on behalf the official equity committee for AgFeed Industries USA, LLC, et al. (Bankr. D. Del.), and in 2009, the award was given for his representation of the official creditor's committee in Trinsic, Inc. (Bankr. S.D. Ala.).

Aaron is a member of Young Presidents' Organization's Chicagoland chapter and an active participant in the Greater Chicago/Upper Midwest Regional Office of the Anti-Defamation League, serving as on its Board of Directors and as Co-Director of Development. In 2015, he served as President of the TMA's Chicago/Midwest Chapter. For almost a decade, Aaron taught complex bankruptcy transactions as an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern Law School. He has lectured extensively on cutting-edge domestic and cross-border insolvency issues at the University of Chicago and The Canadian Institute, and has published dozens of topical articles including contributions to several leading treatises.

"I have worked with Aaron since the early days of his career. He is bright, personable and accessible. His response time and attention to detail go unrivalled. That said, the key reason for retaining him is creative solutions."

Outside of work, Aaron enjoys spending time with his wife and three beautiful daughters, as well as traveling and meeting new people. He is a self-proclaimed foodie and proud craft beer geek who neither cooks nor brews.
